We have been all deeply saddened by the news that Professor Dilip Ballal, the Technical Editor of the Journal for Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, passed away on Nov. 23, 2012. His untimely departure is a great loss to his family, his university, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. (AIAA)—the professional communities he was a central part of, and to the ASME publications community. At the University of Dayton, Professor Ballal was the Hans von Ohain Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and served as the Director of the von Ohain Fuels and Combustion Center and the Division Head for Energy and Environmental Engineering at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI). He received his Ph.D. from the Cranfield Institute of Technology and held positions at the General Motors Research Laboratories and Purdue University before joining the...
