J. Thermal Sci. Eng. Appl 5(2), 020301 (May 17, 2013) (1 page) Paper No: TSEA-13-1015; doi: 10.1115/1.4023582 History: Received January 24, 2013; Revised January 29, 2013

The celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the Heat Transfer Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers has been recognized in the dedicated June 2013 issues of the Journal of Heat Transfer and the Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications. In these two issues, historical events of the Heat Transfer Division are reviewed and advances in heat transfer are discussed.

These two special issues demonstrate the diversity of activity within the heat transfer community with invited articles from specialists in the field. The articles include analytical, numerical, and experimental developments in conduction, convection (including multiphase heat transfer), and radiation. The Journal of Heat Transfer articles focus on fundaments of heat and mass transfer science; whereas, papers in the Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications present applications of heat and mass transfer.

Authors who have contributed papers to the Journal of Heat Transfer are: historical review, W. J. Marner; heat transfer systems, I. Catton et al. and E. Sparrow et al.; porous media, A. V. Kuznetsov and D. A. Nield and S. V. Garimella et al.; biological heat transfer, T. Ohara et al. and J. C. Bischof et al.; microchannel heat transfer, S. G. Kandlikar et al.; microscale heat transfer, K. E. Goodson et al., Z. M. Zhang et al., T. S. Fisher et al., P. M. Norris et al. and G. Chen et al.; boiling, J. N. Chung and S. C. Maroo and V. K. Dhir et al.; manufacturing, Y. Jaluria; radiation, M. F. Modest; and electronics cooling, Y. Joshi et al.

Authors who have contributed papers to the Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications are historical review, W. J. Marner; CFD methods for turbulent heat transfer, D. Tafti; solar thermal collector design, P. E. Phelan et al.; multiphase solidification, P. Dutta et al.; heat transfer in solar thermochemical applications, W. Lipinski et al.; internal cooling for turbine airfoils, M. K. Chyu et al.; heat transfer in fire modeling, O. A. Ezekoye et al.; helical swirl flow heat transfer enhancement, R. M. Manglik and A. E. Bergles; gas turbine heat transfer review, J. C. Han; thermal energy storage for solar applications, R. Pitchumani et al.; and high flux, two phase thermal management, I. Mudawar.

We thank the authors who prepared the articles within the stringent length and time requirements. We thank the reviewers who provided meaningful suggestions on short notice. Furthermore, we recognize the significance and support of the 2012–2013 Executive Committee of the Heat Transfer Division: R. E. Hogan, Chair; S. A. Sherif, Vice Chair; Y. Chudnovsky, Treasurer; S. Acharya, Secretary; Y. X. Tao, Member at Large; and J. F. Klausner, Past Chair and the 75th Anniversary Steering Committee: F. A. Kulacki, Chair, and Members S. A. Sherif and S. Ekkad.
